GLI's vision, mission, and objectives

Vision

Our vision is a global community that respects planetary boundaries and distributes the risks and consequences of environmental destruction and global warming fairly. This is achieved through appropriate legislation, its enforcement, and a legal system that comprehensively protects the environment and human rights.

Mission

We use law and the rule of law as levers for environmental protection and human rights. We help to enforce the observance of planetary boundaries and human rights.

We empower civil society actors in Germany and worldwide to understand, apply, and improve the law in this sense. We convince politicians and the public of the need for strong environmental law and a strong civil society.

Areas of work and objectives

  1. Strong environmental law
Strong environmental law ensures a good and fair future for all. Through GLI, civil society understands the law and uses it for the common good.
  2. Strong environmental democracy
Environmental law is enforced because there are comprehensive rights to information and participation and broad access to the courts. These rights are valued by society. In GLI, the international Aarhus Convention, which secures these rights, has a strong representative in Germany.
  3. International responsibility
Affected communities can step up their resistance to the destruction of the environment and human rights violations by German actors through legal means in Germany and the EU.
  4. Fundamental rights of the environmental movement
The importance of climate activism for the common good and democratic participation is understood and accepted by all relevant actors in society.
Activists and their organizations enjoy better protection against repression thanks to strengthened legal capabilities, structures, and networks. Existing and increasing repression is discussed among the general public in connection with freedom of assembly and freedom of expression.

Our approach

We provide training, coordinate strategic action by environmental organizations, and convince politicians and the public. By doing so, we promote respect and appreciation for our fellow humans and for nature.
