Redirecting investments toward environmentally and climate-friendly economic practices is one of the key drivers for the success of the socio-ecological transformation in Europe. Against this backdrop, our project in the field of sustainable finance focuses on environmental corporate law—a dynamic area of law at the intersection of environmental and commercial law.
We define environmental corporate law as encompassing key European regulatory frameworks such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), the EU Taxonomy Regulation, the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR), the Deforestation Regulation, and the Empowering Consumers Directive. Together, they form the regulatory framework for sustainable business practices in the European Union.
Our project strengthens an informed, connected, and empowered civil society that critically monitors the implementation of environmental corporate obligations. At the same time, we promote exchange and collaboration between civil society, the media, and the legal profession.
We advocate for strong and effective environmental corporate law, with a particular focus on the enforcement of existing regulations. Through targeted capacity building, we share knowledge, connect stakeholders, and empower civil society to actively fulfill its role and to embed environmental and climate protection in (corporate) law and in the public debate for the long term.
The Compass on Environmental Corporate Law is the central format of our project. Through workshops, webinars, and accompanying materials, we share practical knowledge, contextualize current legal developments, and foster exchange and networking to support civil society’s active role in monitoring the implementation and enforcement of corporate environmental responsibility.
